Hartenjagen is a music video I created for Dutch artist Marc Hakkert. The video is a surrealistic take on the Dutch folk-pop genre and the game of love. It tells the story of a man who takes his chances. As he keeps going all-in, the line between fantasy and reality begins to blur. The woman across the table becomes both a symbol of everything he hopes to win, and everything he inevitably keeps losing.
The video plays with metaphors from the card game Hearts: every move is an attempt, every rejection a lost round. In the end, it’s less about winning or losing, and more about continuing to play. Continuing to hope. A melancholic, absurdist game about romantic bravado, self-deception, and the addictive nature of romantic idealism.
A love letter to chance, rejection, and the drama we invent for ourselves when the stakes feel high.
The song belongs to a beloved folk-pop genre in the Netherlands. Its sentimental, catchy songs are often played in cafés and bars. This genre thrives on big emotions, heartbreak, and sing-along choruses. It’s the soundtrack to a night out, or a broken heart. And these themes are exactly what this song is toying with.
